Luther High School South & Junior High

3130 West 87th Street, Anthony Rainey, Executive Director and Principal

Luther High School South was founded over 50 years ago from a desire to encourage young people to continue a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. That remains South's driving commitment today. Luther South fosters a caring Christian community in an urban setting for students in Grades 6-12. South provides Theology classes, chapel services, encourage church attendance on Sundays and spiritual extracurricular groups, which is a way they strive to model a faith, which is a part of life.

Founded in 1951, Luther High School South is celebrating more than a half-century of ministry with “Peace, Be Still …” as its theme for the 2006-2007 school year. Encompassing a junior high and high school, Luther South’s current enrollment is 320 students. According to Chassie Davis, Recruitment Director and graduate of South, the school, located on Chicago’s south side at 87th and Kedzie Avenue, draws students from surrounding neighborhoods and as far away as 15 miles. Leading a staff of 25 dedicated full- and part-time teachers are Principal Anthony Rainey and Vice- Principal Sharon Mason.

Luther South also has a strong academic curriculum that includes specialized fine arts and business offerings. About 99 percent of Luther South graduates are accepted at colleges across the country.

CLEF Good News Fund is privileged to partner with Luther South so more students can benefit from the quality, Christ-centered education the school provides. “During the 2006-2007 school year, Luther South will receive $20,000 from CLEF Good News Fund,” according to Malaun Willie, Director of Development and graduate of Luther South. Other funding has also helped South in other areas such as Special Education.

The special education program at Luther High School South enables students in need of extra help to receive personalized instruction each day during their study hall times. Special education teacher, Elease Adams, is also a graduate of Luther South. Her work with the students has been so effective that most graduates in recent years have gone on to college.

As Luther South parents, students, teachers and CLEF Good News Fund continue to work together, another 50 years is waiting to unfold more stories of lives touched and changed by the grace and power of God.
